The University of Northern BC has named its new Vice President and Academic Provost.
Doctor Bill Krane was announced to the position Thursday with 45 years of university experience under his belt.
He’s currently at Simon Fraser University and says he hasn’t put a solid plan for UNBC into place yet, until he gets here.
“It’s difficult to actually make assessments until you get deep into what the institution is actually doing, because a lot of the time there are very interesting things that are going on that are not well-known, particularly to other areas of the university and particularly administrators,” he says.
He says one of his tasks is to assess the kinds of programs and strengths at the University.
“I’m a firm believer in always trying to build on strength,” he says. “So, once you have those core areas identified, certainly ones in the environment and resource areas.”
Given his current role with SFU, he says it’s too soon to look at any concrete changes to UNBC’s academic plans.
“This [hiring] process that I’ve just gone through has been kind of a whirlwind affair, because I wasn’t considering making a change at all,” he says. “Point of fact, I was looking forward to heading into retirement and moving into another institution and starting anew was not foremost on my mind at all.”
Doctor Krane is replacing Mark Dale, who is going on to become the University’s first Dean of Regional Programs, focusing on campuses outside of Prince George, as of January 1st, 2015.
