Three local businesses have made their way onto the top 10 lists for the Small BC Business Awards.
The semi-finalists include: Game Quest, Playgrounds Café and Shiraz Café and Restaurant.
Shiraz owner Reza Akbari (pictured) says he made it this far in the competition thanks to the record-breaking number of votes he received in Northern BC.
“That means a lot to me,” he says. “To me, this is the real part of winning.”
Shiraz made the top 10 in the “Best Immigrant Entrepreneur” category.
“Whatever I learn through this challenge, I’m going to bring it back to my business, to Shiraz,” he says. “Shiraz is about people, improvement of Shiraz would bring it back to society and the community, as well.”
There’s a $1,500 prize waiting at the end for the overall winner , but Akbari says the challenge ahead is more interesting than the money.
“I don’t look at it necessarily as winning a contest, I look at it as another challenge that I will gain and learn through this process, this is what matters to me,” he says.
The top five will be announced January 30th and will have to give a “Dragon’ s Den” style pitch in front of a panel of judges on why they should be named the best in BC.
The winner will be crowed February 26, 2015.
