Warm & icy conditions prompt ICBC to warn drivers and pedestrians to be alert

Despite the unseasonably warm weather, roads in the area are under winter weather conditions and ICBC is once again reminding drivers to change their habits.

Safety Coordinator Diana Pozer says 75% of crashes in BC happen at intersections.

“With our fluctuating temperatures, we cardinally have seen a lot of icy road surfaces, especially early in the morning and overnight, you’ll see a lot of black ice and very icy surfaces, then it changes during the day,” she says. “We really have to be paying attention and keep our focus on the road.”

Pozer says pedestrians also need to be aware and need to be seen by drivers in the early mornings and at night, especially at intersections.

“We want to make sure that we are being seen, have eye-contact with them, always cross at the designated crosswalk, don’t go mid-block,” she says. “Before stepping off the curb, look both ways for oncoming vehicles and with those icy surfaces, make sure they are fully stopped before you start out across the intersection.”
