School District 57 receives funding to promote the trades

School District 57 has received an influx of funding from the provinces industry training authority to encourage high school students to enter the trades.

The $30,000 increase will go towards raising awareness of the Secondary School Apprenticeship program.

Apprenticeship advisor Walter Sorokovsky says the program is growing, with a 7.5% increase in students over last year. There are 1,732 youth apprentices registered in SSA programs province wide.

“Very common ones are heavy duty mechanic, construction or chef.” Says Sorokovsky. “It’s really up to the student but it gives them the ability to at least consider a trades pathway and start down that path”

The funding boost will also go towards the “Yes to It” program, which raises awareness in grade 5 and 6 students for the trades.
