Icy roads led to Mackenzie fatal

Mackenzie RCMP are in the initial stages of their investigation into Tuesday morning’s fatal crash on Highway 97.

RCMP were called to Highway 97 south of McLeod Lake at around 7:30 Tuesday morning after a woman was hit by a vehicle.

Cpl. Dave Tyerman says two commercial vehicles, along with a pilot vehicle had pulled over to “chain up” when one of the drivers, a 53 year-old Alberta woman was struck by a passing transport truck that slid sideways on the icy highway.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and the investigation continues between North District Traffic Services and the BC Coroner’s Service, looking into if there was any criminality involved.

The name of the deceased is being withheld, pending next of kin notification.
