The UHNBC board has approved a plan to address capacity concerns on site.
The level of acute care service need has risen dramatically over the past six months and some added service aims to gradually curb some issues the hospital has faced.
Chief operating officer Michael MacMillan says there are of course, some challenges:
“We are trying to do all of this work to put in place other programs while the system is pretty stretched, so managers and staff are working very hard to get these things up and running as quickly as a possible. So there is a pressure, a time pressure, so that creates pressure on everybody”
MacMillan listed a couple of areas they will be addressing, including 11 new respite beds and 15 new complex care beds, as well as a series of home support services to help support clients more quickly and speed up discharge times
