Big day for the PG Salvation Army

Four River Co-op presented a cheque to the Prince George Salvation Army Friday morning worth $1,176.98.

Proceeds came from Fuel Good Day, where ten cents from every litre sold at Co-op gas bar locations on September 18th of this year, as well as proceeds from a fundraising BBQ, was donated to the Salvation Army. Allan Bieganski, General Manager for Co-op, explained why the Salvation Army was chosen for the fundraiser.

“We believe in the great work that they do helping those less fortunate, helping those that are struggling to feed themselves, get themselves clothed, finding a house and accommodations.”

The Salvation Army makes over 400 hampers for individuals not able to provide a Christmas for their families. This money goes into providing things like toys for kids and meals for families during the holidays.

Introduced at the cheque presentation were “hope bracelets”. The red rubber bracelets are meant to be a conversation starter about a growing issue in PG.

“They will bring awareness to our community that poverty, homelessness, and addiction lives in Prince George. We don’t always see it but it’s here,” said Salvation Army Donor Relations and Fundraising Coordinator, Bill Glasgow.

The Salvation Army also launched its annual Kettle Campaign fundraiser Friday. The volunteer-driven organization maintains a $250,000 for the event but Glasgow is hoping for a little bit more.

“I have a little bit loftier goal this year because I’m optimistic. We have such a great community in Prince George where people are either giving up their time, other resources, or money, it just makes our job that much easier,” he said.

“With the support we get, everything we bring in from our kettles we can put back into the community as far as programs, services, and what we do.”

Locations include all four Save On Foods, The Real Canadian Superstore, Pine Centre Mall, Walmart, Canadian Tire, Shoppers Drug Mart – Spruceland, London Drugs, Pine Centre Mall Liquor Store and Hart Liquor store, both starting December 1, and Costco, starting December 10.

The 2018 Kettle Campaign runs until 2:00pm December 24th.
