Kids at Ron Brent Elementary dug into a full breakfast Monday morning.
Robin Ryan (pictured) with the Breakfast Club of Canada helped launch the program.
“There’s going to be a warm, comfortable environment here [for the students], every morning there’s friends here for you to hang out and talk with as you have breakfast,” he explains. “The kids are in Kindergarten and Grade One, they are going to be here for a long time still. They can learn early on that they’ve got this opportunity to come in, and it’s not just a case of you come in and have to go right to class.”
Ryan points out that kids have numerous reasons for not eating breakfast. He says it’s not just a case of socioeconomic issues, though that plays a big part, but often kids don’t have time in the morning, or both parents work.
The Breakfast Club program was given an assist by TransCanada gas company and will be helping provide breakfast at the school for the next three to four years.
