The mandatory flu shot rule that came into effect earlier this week put a performance by a youth choir at a senior’s home in jeopardy.
The Ft. St. John Northern Lights Youth Choir was almost forced to cancel their upcoming performance at a seniors home due to the new rule, which requires all visitors to have flu immunizations or wear masks before entering the care home.
Choir Director Jennifer Giesbrecht says after much deliberation with the Ministry of Health, they have been allowed to sing at a distance.
“We received clarification from the Health Board that while they still encourage immunization they request that those who have flu like symptoms don’t come,” she says.
President of the BC Nurses Union Gayle Duteil says the mandatory vaccination is essential to patient care, though they take visitors to facilities at their word that they are up to date on their shots.
“For visitors coming in to health care facilities, it’s an honour system,” she says. “But wearing a mask is never the best instance in some levels and some environments of patient care.”
Geisbrecht says she had no idea the rule was in place, even though it was in effect last year. However, she says she is thrilled they will still be able to perform this weekend.
