An outside open learning space at Vanway Elementary School was approved by the School District 57 Board of Trustees at Tuesday’s public meeting.

“The mission of the District is to inspire learning anywhere,” said SD 57 Board Chair Tim Bennett.

“So by being able to get these outdoor learning spaces and to get kids out of the classroom, it shows them that the classroom is more than just four walls, but it’s the world around them.”

A $20,000 donation was provided in memory of Pam Schellest, a former teacher in the District. Bennett explains where that money will go.

“We have to make sure the property is prepped, that the equipment is safely installed, and is treated to be able to survive all the weather elements. Those funds will be used to get ready to install and to maintain the new outdoor learning space at Vanway Elementary.”

With winter right around the corner, Bennett anticipates the area to start being used next spring.
