Bullying persists in SD57; trustee nominees want change

Bullying continues to be prominent within schools.

A pair of School District 57 (SD57) trustee nominees were asked about bullying at Tuesday’s debate, with Ron Polillo saying the key is in education.

“The school board does have a policy on that but I think it’s the time to look at that policy, revise it, and really enforce that policy.

“It’s something that needs to be addressed and is a priority. For me as a parent, and for all of us, it’s a big issue and it’s not only an issue that’s happening in our school district, it’s happening everywhere.”

The other nominee asked about bullying is one who knows all too well about the issue as it pertains to SD 57. Betty Bekkering was on the Board of Trustees from 2011 to 2014 and remembers having discussions about it.

She is disappointed to hear how the issue persists.

“We need to find a way to make [victims of bullying] be able to come forward to some adult who can help them and get through that,” Bekkering goes on to say how times have changed and how much more difficult technology has made it to eliminate bullying.

“It has become more of cyberbullying and that’s harder for anyone to get a grasp of.”

Saturday, October 20th is General Voting Day.
