Today is the deadline for health-care workers to get flu shots

Monday, Dec. 1st is the deadline for BC health-care workers to get a flu shot or wear a mask while caring for patients.

Manager of Communicable Disease, Carolyn Bouchard with Northern Health says their new policy protects their vulnerable patients.

“The best way to do that is to immunize them against influenza, but also to immunize those around them, that’s the people that are caring for them, the health-care workers,” she says.

Some workers around the province have opposed the mandatory flu shots, but Health Minister Terry Lake says there has been more compliance, this time.

“It varies by Health Authority, but we’re getting up to about 70% across the province, but we hope to exceed 80%,” he says.

The rules also apply to any member of the public visiting a health-care facility anywhere in the province.

The BC Health Ministry says the policy will be enforced by the “honour system” for visitors and masks will be readily available.
