An important home weekend for the UNBC Timberwolves women’s soccer team got off to a rocky start.
With a 1-3-2 record heading into Friday’s match against UBC at Masich Place Stadium, the T-Wolves came out flat and fell by a 7-0 score against the Canada West leading Thunderbirds.
UBC seemed to be in playoff mode right from the start as they blitzed UNBC offensively jumping out to a 4-0 lead at halftime.
Leading the way for the Thunderbirds was forward Amelia Crawford who had her way with Timberwolves goalkeeper Madi Doyle, potting a hat-trick enroot to the convincing victory.
“During training we’ve been talking a lot about what’s going to work against this team and a lot about going around players and then cutting it back in and I think we prepared well this week doing that so I felt pretty confident going into this game knowing I needed to do that to score,” said Crawford.
The defeat was equally as disappointing for UNBC Head Coach Neil Sedgwick who gave full marks to UBC on their dominant effort from start to finish.
“We have to be at our best and we have to defend well if we’re going to play against a team like this and we didn’t do that at the start of the game and they took advantage of that, they came at us and started to press us and out us under a lot of pressure as they attacked and we really have to be at our best when we play these teams.”
“They’re good players and good athletes, they are coached well and they take advantage of the things you give them and then you put yourself in a tough situation to get a result.”
Alyssa Hunt and Michelle Jang also had two goal efforts for the Thunderbirds who outshot UNBC 32-5 in the game.
UBC improves to a league best 6-2-0.
UNBC drops to 1-4-2 on the season heading into Sunday’s (Noon) contest against the Victoria Vikes (4-4-0) at Masich Place Stadium.
In men’s action the Timberwolves earned a 1-1 draw against UBC in Vancouver Friday night.
Francesco Bartolillo scored in the first half for the Timberwolves who improve to 4-1-3 and are in third place in the Pacific Division.
The Thunderbirds outshot UNBC 26-4.
Both teams play again Sunday at 1PM.
