Federation of Labour President wants Provincial minimum wage increase

A new campaign has been launched by the BC Federation of Labour.

It aims to reduce the lofty child poverty rates here in BC, as well as hike the minimum wage to $15 an hour.

When asked about independent businesses being unable to pay that $15 an hour wage, BC Federation President Jim Sinclair says not to forget about the level playing field:

“But if we raise the minimum wage to $15 then I can pay that cause all my competitors have to pay the same rate. So I think it’s actually good for everybody and it means as a small business you’ll have to compete but you’ll compete on the things you do and your ingenuity as an employer and a business owner and not on cheap labour”

Sinclair says the fight for 15 campaign hopes to assist the nearly 120,000 British Columbians who earn minimum wage, and reduce child poverty here in the Province.

He also says a recent survey of over 800 BC residents was conducted and saw over 75% in favour of a change. While 93% of those residents also agree that the minimum wage should be adjusted every few years.
