One of North America’s fastest growing sports is now free and accessible in Prince George.
The City has installed four new pickleball courts at Fairburn Park near Foothills Boulevard and North Nechako Road, the first public courts of their kind.
City Parks Supervisor Chris Bjorn believes the Northern capital has taken great interest in the low-skill sport.
“It can almost be comparable to Table Tennis, but you have a paddle with a wiffle ball. It does take an agility to move around, but it’s low impact and really a fun game to play.”
The game is primarily popular among residents over the age of 40, and the courts are also part of PG City Council’s strategy in encouraging physical activity for everyone.
With the increase in demand, Bjorn adds this could also play a factor in upcoming expansions, including Carrie Jane Gray Memorial Park.
“If this grows in popularity, there may be a few other court areas we could convert so that there’d be both tennis courts and pickleball courts in the same vicinity.”
There are currently five private courts at the PG Tennis Club.
