BC Lions sending 122 kids from across BC to the Grey Cup

The BC Lions have teamed up with the Ministry of Education to send 122 students from across the province to the Grey Cup and skills summit.

Jamie Cartmell is the community relations director with the BC Lions. He says they picked the kids with a different approach;

“Lots of programs tend to focus on the very high achievers; your head of the student leadership group, the captain of the football team and it wasn’t necessarily those kids we were going after. We picked great kids that perhaps haven’t had this kind of opportunity before.”

On the Monday following the Grey Cup the students will get a day of leadership and team building training with the BC Lions as well as interactive demonstrations about the skilled trades.

Cartmell said they wanted to make sure the weekend was more than just the football game;

“How do we create a once in a lifetime experience for these kids that not only showcases the Grey Cup but also important life lessons that relate to decisions they will be making in the future.”

Pacific Northwest LNG is a cosponsor, which was a part of the drive to get the kids interested in trades.

The lone Prince George student selected to go on the trip is grade 8 Tyler Frederick of Kelly Road. The young football player says he can’t wait to meet the lions.
