BC wood pellet industry benefiting from Asian trade

BC’s minister of international trade has just returned from a trade mission to Asia that featured stops in Japan, China and South Korea.

The LNG and timber industries featured heavily. Teresa Wat says the Korean markets are having a big impact on the wood pellet business in BC;

“We expect the demand for BC wood pellets to grow even more. British Columbia now has 13 wood pellet plants in our province and because of this great demand we have four more plants coming on stream in the next couple years”

She says Asian demand already exceeds supply;

“They stated that they wanted to buy more wood pellets than we have a supply of. Pinnacle, which has its head office in Prince George… is one of the companies that South Korean companies are importing wood pellets from”

The growth is credited to Asia’s shift to renewable energy and heating sources.

The top commodity exports from BC to China, South Korea and Japan remain wood products, coal and copper.
