As the holiday season nears, organizations are calling on you to help those in need.
One group is the Association Advocating for Women and Children, or AWAC.
Executive Director Diane Nakamura says they need donations of toques, mittens, scarves, pi jamas and hygiene items for 60 Christmas gift-baskets.
She has noticed an increase in their services over the last few years.
“With economic development in the north and the lack of safe, affordable housing in Prince George, we’ve been seeing that there is a ‘bottle-neck’ happening at all the shelters,” she says. “Women get stuck there at the shelter, because they are not able to find safe, affordable housing to live independently.”
Nakamura is also noticing an increase in seniors who use their services, saying “In the last year, we’ve had 109 seniors stay with us and access our outreach and drop-in services, to me, this is alarming.”
To donate items, visit the AWAC office at 144 George Street, or call Nakamura at 250-613-9610.
