The BC Forest Safety Council hosted a seminar targeting towards work site managers and safety professionals about the dangers of distracted driving.
The seminar was presented by Drop it and Drive, a company started by Karen Bowman after she was the victim in two accidents and had her daughter seriously injured in a third due to a distracted driver.
Drop it and Drive founder Karen Bownman says the problem isn’t limited to just young people;
“The issue of distracted driving isn’t specific to youth or teens like some people like to think it is because they are the texting generation. Research has found, by far and large, many more drivers that are texting and driving are adult, so called ‘experienced drivers’. These people are setting the example”
She added that work site have enough risk factors as it is, and having workers distracted by their phones just compounds things. Distracted workers are just another ‘risk factor’ any employer should want to eliminate.
