The College of New Caledonia is getting an expansion to its early childhood care and learning program(ECEs).
The B.C. government is investing $109,000 to help the school add 12 seats for the new school year.
The spaces are going to their Post-basic Early Childhood Care and Learning Diploma.
“This will give students the ability to work with specialized groups,” says Acting Dean Alison Anderson. “One is infant toddlers and the other are children with special needs. We know that in CNC’s area we have a number of urgencies and there are positions to fill in those areas.”
The 2017 Labour Market Outlook predicts the province will need 9,100 additional ECEs by 2027.
The opening of these spaces will allow the college to introduce an online program.
“The online for the Post-basic will just allow our students to have more flexibility in their work schedules. Their practicums will still all be watched an supervised but the students will have the ability to do the school work in their own time.”
Anderson added with the new seats made available the school will be looking at hiring additional staff.
Funding for the expansion at CNC is part of the $7.4 million over three years that the Ministry of Advanced Education has committed for post-secondary institutions throughout B.C.
