The recent thundershowers have helped with the Prince George Fire Centre contain the 35 wildfires currently burning.
There is only one large fire taking place in Comstock Lake, where it’s estimated to be 2,300 hectares in size and is considered under control.
Forest Tower with the BC Wildfire Centre says they aren’t worried about lightning starts with the recent weather.
“We aren’t super concerned about the risk of dry lightning at this point. Most of the lightning we’ve seen has come with at least some precipitation, so that is reducing the risk of lightning starts. If you look at the current danger rating the recent precipitation has brought that down to either moderate or low.”
Just because it has rained the last few days doesn’t mean fires can’t be started.
“Just always be mindful of when you are having those campfires that even though it has rained recently that still doesn’t completely remove the risk of campfires.”
From April 1st through June 27, the BC Wildfire Service responded to 568 fires, 40 per cent of those are believed to be human-caused.
