French Immersion survey has some parents concerned about the future of the program

Concerns are still being raised about the future capacity for the French Immersion Programming at Duchess Park.

A survey sent out by SD57 is asking parents, staff, and students if they would like the program to move to PGSS or be split between two schools.

Parent Advisory Council Vice President at Duchess Park Bonnie White says if they decide to move the program to other schools it can create stress for those students, like her middle child Brody.

“I have some definite concerns about what it would do to him in terms of his learning outcome and his social dynamics because I’m a firm believer that having a core group of friends is important to the stability of their learning environment.”

Bonnie added some students won’t be affected because they haven’t fully developed those core learning skills, like her youngest Brielle

“I wouldn’t be extremely attached to Duchess because some of my friends may go to PGSS so I would have friends there if I didn’t go to Duchess,” says Brielle.

When it comes down to a decision White says they need to be cautious because it will affect a lot of people.

“I think the survey is quite general. The intention behind it though is, I think, really the thing we should focus on and that was to get that feedback from parents and families.”

The survey deadline has been extended until June 29th, with two additional emails being provided if parents want to give further feedback.
