Merrick not surprised by Wells mayor 3rd place finish

Prince George Councillor Jillian Merrick’s bid to become the mayor of Wells fell short.

Finishing third with just 25 votes, Merrick was not surprised by the final tally.

“My participation in the election was about creating an election for the community, they haven’t had an election or competition for a position for quite some time.”

Jay Vermette won the vote, earning support from about half the community with 56 votes to his name. Former Wells Councillor Richard Wright placed second with 32 votes.

“A lot of people have told me ‘you’re never really an experienced politician until you’ve lost an election’ so I guess there’s that,” explains Merrick.

“The was also just seeing the difference between being a councillor in the north’s largest city and running for office in the north’s smallest community.”

Merrick will continue to serve as councillor for the City of Prince George.
