RCMP are warning motorists to be vigilant when warming-up their vehicles on these cold days.
Cpl. Craig Douglass says a vehicle unlocked and running with keys in the ignition is a prime target for thieves.
“Prince George RCMP certainly get a few calls every year, especially during the cold-spells when people are warming up their vehicles, of vehicles that have been stolen as a result of people leaving their vehicles while they warm up,” Douglass explains.
“You have to remember that people on the street may be walking by, they’re cold too and getting into a warm vehicle, or a vehicle that might get them from Point A to Point B quicker and warmer is appealing to some people in that situation,” he says.
Douglass has some tips to reduce thievery, “We encourage people to leave their vehicles locked, if they can, use a remote car starter, or stay with their vehicle as it warms up,” he says.
Douglass warns it only takes a few seconds for a thief to take a vehicle.
