ICYMI: PG residents to have a “Whale of a Time at Pine”

Children and Adults can learn more about whales, salmon, and conservation at “Whale of a Time at Pine”

The Pine Centre Mall partnered with Spruce City Wild Life and REAPS to bring an interactive activity to help better understand anatomy and ecology of killer whales and the importance the salmon population has on the animal.

Individuals can take part in Build a Whale by assembling and replacing the bones of a 25×15 foot female Offshore Killer Whale skeleton, proving an opportunity to learn more about the anatomy of the giant animal. This will be the first time a whale skeleton has traveled to the north from an organization on Vancouver Island.

This isn’t just a fun activity for families, but a way to spread awareness about a growing problem says Steven Hamilton, SCWA President.

“We raise what is known as a Chinook Salmon and our numbers up here are low. The Killer Whales favorite food is the Chinook Salmon, so, our food source for the Killer Whale starts up here in Prince George.”

Killer Whales are on the endangered species list because of the shortage of Chinook Salmon reaching the ocean.

“A lot of people don’t realize this, and we’re hoping to bring that connection from the ocean to Prince George and back.”

The event runs today starting at 10am and ends June 10th at 4pm.
