CNC expanding on its student art collection

The College of New Caledonia has invested in artwork created by its students and is putting them on display throughout the college.

This year, 16 pieces of artwork created by 10 students in the Fine Arts and Web and Graphic Design program. This is an increase from 10 pieces the previous year.

Joseph Cunningham created two paintings being purchased and says creating them took patience.

“This one took a lot longer than the other one because I hadn’t had a visualization of what I wanted and this one flowed a little naturally. I would say this took about twenty-five to thirty hours, but it was a lot of patience and it’s all about thinking about where you want to go and what you want to do.”

Cunningham added he pulled his inspiration from elements he couldn’t control with his hands directly and would let the brush flow across the canvas, than work with what was left to bring images forward.

For the past few years, CNC has invested in students artwork and added them to their collection throughout the college. This helps with acknowledging the work they put in every day says Fine Arts Instructor Betty Kovacic.

“In our world where technology and science is valued, and I’m not swaying it shouldn’t be, but the humanities are about the human soul and the human spirit. By acknowledging our students artwork we are acknowledging that important element of the human condition.”

She added the art is in high demand and there has been research done that shows the importance of beauty in the workplace.
