Students across the school district are showcasing their research projects on Canadian topics at the Heritage Fair.
This year, ten different schools are taking part in the annual event at the Civic Centre tomorrow(Friday), presenting projects ranging from family heritage, immigration to Canada and local history.
Students demonstrate to volunteer judges how they connect with their history with their projects and participate in cultural activities.
“The whole point of the Heritage Fair program is to foster an interest in history and heritage,” says Krystal Leason, Operation Manager. “History and heritage often gets ignored or swept under the rug in favour of things like science and math, which are also important, but it is important to understand what happened in Canada and what that means for us today.”
Holding an event like this can open the doors for children to explore future careers added Leason.
“We had a discussion from a professor at the university and one of the students said afterwords, wow, I didn’t really realize you could be a historian for a job. So, it’s opening their eyes to future possibilities.”
Up to three students will be chosen from the program to attend the BC Provincial Heritage Fair in Squamish in July.
The public can view the projects at the Community Showcase and Award Presentation at 5pm.
