UNBC investigating the decline in rural nursing

Rural BC is having trouble keeping nurses in its communities and a team of experts is looking to find out why.

Dr. Martha McLeod, a Nursing Professor with the University of Northern BC is leading a national team to study the issue.

She says the University’s “Rural Nursing Certificate” has been successful in getting nurses out to remote communities, but retaining them hasn’t been working and the shortage is getting more severe.

“What we are hoping to find out is what are the kinds of things that communities and employers can do to work with nurses to help retain them in rural communities,” Dr. McLeod says.

She says their research will survey around 10 thousand nurses from numerous backgrounds across Canada.
