Homeowners able to build small home on their lot

Monday’s council meeting saw a number of residents challenge a change to the Official Community Plan.

The OCP change would allow residents in 10 different zones across Prince George to build a small home on their site, provided it meets certain criteria.

Several residents spoke during the public hearing on the issue. They brought up the issue of affordable housing versus social housing.

“Those are completely two different issues to deal with and I’m really proud of the decision that council made tonight,” says Councillor Terri McConnachie, who voted in favour of the change.

“This is going to give current homeowners much more autonomy on how they manage their property, that’s their biggest investment, and their most beloved asset which is their family.”

Affordable housing has been a hot-button issue in Prince George in recent memory. McConnachie notes the vast range of people this will help in regards to that.

“Wages have not kept up with the increase in the cost of living and that includes housing and that is targetted for students, younger people getting out on their own, and then once we age out and our opportunity to earn more money is gone.”

Council voted unanimously in favour of the change.
