SD57 is sending a letter to Rob Fleming, Education Minister, to emphasize their support for retaining the current At Large system.
Right now, there is seven trustees to represent the whole district such as, McBride, Mackenzie, rural areas, and Prince George.
The new proposal would see only one trustee for McBride, Valemount, and one for Mackenzie.
“If this is passes it’s going to change the way we run elections,” says Tony Cable, Trustee. “It will change our financial situation, it will definitely cost more money because we’ll have to update our technology for more video conferencing.”
“Because of the distances, this will put a real burden on them getting to meetings. It will be a bit dangerous in the winter.”
Cable added the current system works and if it gets switch could bring in some equity issues.
“You’re going to have a very small population of students being represented by one trustee, and other trustees are going to have to look after a lot of other schools and students.”
The board hopes the minister considers their letter of unanimous support to keep the current process before a decision is made.
