New greenhouse system to enhance year-round food growing at CNC

CNC’S Professional Cooking program is benefitting from a year-round growing system thanks to a new greenhouse, which sits in their kitchen.

It features panels from a Lower Mainland company called Endura Form providing heat with an electrical rod, solar panels along with a hot water solution.

A system like this could revolutionize how we grow things in northern BC.

“Forty below you’re still growing vegetables, how good is that? Everything comes from the bottom up and with this particular system, we create our own thermal energy and keep the soil warm so the germination is quicker, growing is quicker and the yield is much more productive,” says Ron Christian, CNC Professional Cooking Instructor.

The greenhouse is set to 32 degrees Celsius and is free of chemicals, bugs and is 100% organic leading them to grow a variety of vegetables.

“We’re growing five types of lettuce, we are growing micro-greens, two types of radish, purple kohlrabi, arugula and we’re growing kale – this is a nine-day cycle from start to finish.”

“You process it just like you would a regular garden and happens is these panels are set up and have holes in them if there is any extra moisture that comes in, it goes down and into a holding tank underneath.”

Christian says if most people bought a system like this, they wouldn’t have to worry about the short growing season.

“How beneficial is that to have all of these vegetables at times like Christmas where you can take vegetables out of your garden or greenhouse with snow on the ground. How good is that?”
