The highest award council can bestow upon an organization has been given to the Rocky Mountain Rangers.
The Freedom of City award, granted by local government, allows the rangers to enter a community, a tradition dating back hundreds of years.
“It’s an incredible honour,” says Amedeo Vecchio, Deputy Commanding Officer of the Rocky Mountain Rangers.
“This is an ancient custom that goes back to the medieval days when military units were approaching a city, and before they could enter they had to be given a trust in order for them to enter the city.”
Prince George use to be home to “A” Company, but they were relocated in Kamloops in 1970.
In 2011, “B” Company was introduced due in large part from citizen volunteers in PG.
This is a chance for the Northern Capital to see everyone who is apart of the Rocky Mountain Rangers.
“I think what people are going to get to see is all the good work and all the people that are apart of our unit, that are citizens of Prince George and outlining communities. Most people have full-time jobs and families, but people still find time to contribute,” added Vecchio.
A ‘March to City Hall’ will take place April 21st, followed by a ceremony in front of city hall, and a dinner later in the evening.
