RDFFG wants to see if PG should introduce curb side composting

Curb side composting could be introduced in the near future for Prince George.

The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George is planning to conduct a study on organic waste, and if the city should start curb side collection of compost.

Rachael Ryder, Waste Division Program Leader, says they currently just take yard waste, but now want to see if there is a need for organic waste.

“It is definitely something that has been brought to our attention and the fact that it is done in other parts of the province. This is why we want to do the study to see how that translates to the north and our region specifically.”

Ryder added they want to see if there is room for expansion within our city, and if there is, are people behind the idea of introducing curb side composting.

If PG were to introduce this new system there would be a cost associated with it, but it’s not known at this time what it might look like.

Having a program like this would also help in reducing the amount of green house gas emissions that gets released into our atmosphere.

“Composting allows us to keep the organics from the landfill,” says Terri McClymont Executive Director of REAPS. “When we put our organics into the landfill it creates methane gas, and that’s what you see, all the flares up in the landfill is the burning of the methane gas made by our organic waste.” .

The RDFFG is hoping to have the study done before the end of the year.
