CNC Scrub Drive raises $540 for bursaries, reaches $10K goal

The College of New Caledonia‘s annual scrub drive culminated Tuesday with a sale of the donated gently used scrubs.

For the last six years, CNC Nursing Instructor Nancy Esopenko has organized the drive.

“It actually recycles scrubs that professionals no longer use, it allows the students to survive on a budget and all the money goes to a bursary.”

The bursary Esopenko is referring to is the Making a Difference bursary. Each year, five health-sciences students in financial need are granted $250. To date, $9,250 has been given to deserving students through the drive.

“Generally we are able to generate about $1,250 to $1,500 a year in sales,” says Esopenko of the biannual event, praising the community for its ongoing support of local students.

“Its been highly successful, very generous donations from the community so that’s almost 2,000 sets of scrubs into the hands of students.”

Today raised $540 from the initiative, which brings the overall goal $10,020 since it started five years ago. Esopenko says her goal was to eclipse the $10,000 mark this year.

Scrubs can be donated for the initiative all year. Drop off spots are found at the CNC library and the Spirit of the North office at the University Hospital of Northern BC.
