Bottle drive to help local athlete fighting cancer

The Timberwolves Student Athlete Society(TSAS) is holding its Fill the Bus Bottle Drive at the CN Centre.

The group is collecting bottles to help local football player Jake McLeod, who is battling cancer in his leg.

Francesco Bartolillo, President of TSAS, explained this is part of their MVP of the month, where they select one person who’s tackling cancer and raises money for them.

“This is kind of the big event of the month, which is the Fill the Bus Bottle Drive. We actually did it last year for a little girl named Olivia Frost, who was a six-year-old girl fighting cancer, so, we decided this year to keep that theme going and we chose Jake McLeod.”

McLeod, who is a graduate of Duchess Park, discovered he had cancer at the age of 14. There is only one of roughly 300 individuals who have the type of cancer he has.

McLeod plans to stop by later in the day, but Bartolillo says he’s really appreciative of the support.

“He said it was nice to know that people are out there trying to help, not just him, but all people who are fighting cancer. Whether you’re old or young it’s never easy for anyone. So, he thought it was pretty cool, especially athletes helping athletes, which is one of our things that is powerful and brings the community together.”

Last year the bottle drive alone brought in more than $3,000, and this year Bartolillo is predicting to match that same amount.
