Two Prince George students recognized for work in combating distracted driving

The RCMP and ICBC teamed up today at the Westside Academy to educate young potential drivers about the risks of distracted driving.

During the event, two students Whitney Anderson and Faith Johnson were recognized for their successful science fair projects.

Grade 10 student Whitney won the Blackberry Smartphone App Development award at the Canada Wide Science Fair in Windsor for her app that stops people from using their phones while driving.

Whitney said she was inspired by her father;

“My dad is a realtor and is always on his phone while he’s driving. I did some research and I found a lot of people are dying from this to epidemic proportions. It’s killing more people than impaired driving. So I just wanted to do something with that, I just didn’t want my dad to die”

The other student, Faith was also recognized for her test that displayed the hazards of texting and driving. She was also inspired by a parent;

“My mom does it all the time, so I said ‘wow this is really dangerous’. So I’ve been trying to get her to stop, and she hasn’t been doing it as much as when I started.”

Distracted driving kills an average of 88 people per year on BC, second to just speed related accidents.
