Dental students at the College of New Caledonia can now be fully equipped for the working world.
That’s according to Instructor Lana Duncan as the school has received more than $200,000 in digital equipment for dental program classrooms.
She says more than 60 students are registered each year, and it’s relieving to make the switch from the old conventional material.
“A new digital sensor alone costs us $10,000. Really just the cost everything; it’s been a really long time coming even with some of the fundraising that was done by the students, but at the end of the day, it’s really just about the expense of all the equipment.”
The new equipment includes chairs, LED lighting, sensors, desks, and computer systems for stronger resolutions.

Everything was funded by CNC’s Capital Plan, as well as student fundraisers.
Duncan says taking images was the most difficult task to accomplish with film.
“That’s where all the errors were in taking photos of patient teeth, which is a little frustrating to both the patients and the students. So with the digital imaging system, we won’t run into any processing issues and it’s better for everyone.”
She adds this will also prevent large radiation exposure to patients who volunteer for students.
Duncan boasts student success from the dental program, claiming multiple phone calls each year from businesses across BC and Alberta for candidates with digital capabilities.
