Warm temperatures has city crews preparing for melting season

The City of Prince George is getting ready for melting to take place in the coming week.

Residents in PG who want to help city crews can start cleaning drains in their neighbourhoods by chipping at ice that may be in the way.

“We ask that homeowners don’t use sprinkler systems or hoses to get rid of the snow, or melt it. It can cause ice hazards and other hazards as well.” says Jon LaFontaine, City of PG Utilities Supervisor.

Members of the public who do this can help create a smoother process for city crews. It can also prevent traffic issues and localized flooding.

“We really do appreciate it when there are people out opening up catch basins with shovels or ice chippers of their own. It’s quite helpful when you show up on site and the property owner can point you in the direction of a catch basin.”

The city also wants people to report any large puddles or flooding concerns so the city can prioritize and plan around areas effected the most.

There is roughly 40 people ready to tackle over 5,500 storm drains in our city.
