Graduation is fast approaching for post-secondary students, and the weight of tuition will start to sink in.

For undergraduates in 2017-18 Statistics Canada reported a tuition fee increase of 3.1 per cent, UNBC saw a 2 per cent raise.

Dan Ryan, Provost and Vice President academic, says he understands the challenges students face when it comes to the cost of education.

“It’s also expensive in terms of living expenses and ensuring they are able to do all the other things they do as well as have an education. When students are going full-time at university it’s very difficult for them to work part-time or to supplement their income, so they can afford their tuition.

The university tries to help with this is by offering scholarships and awards to offset costs.

“UNBC provides scholarships and awards, in the order of 3 million annually, and about 1,200 awards given out on an annual basis. That means anywhere from one and four of our students actually receives an award.”

Ryan added, UNBC fairs well with students paying back loans, this is mainly due to 84 per cent of graduates able to find full -time work within six months of graduating.
