Canadians not seeing eye-to-eye on new O Canada lyrics

A recent study shows that Canadians are divided when it comes to the gender-neutral anthem.

In an online survey, done by Insight West, 48 per cent disagree with the change from ‘all thy sons command’ to ‘all of us command’ with 42 per cent agreeing with the new lyrics.

Mario Canseco, VP of Public Affairs at Insight West, says it’s interesting to look at the demographic analysis.

“If you are over 55 and a conservative voter you’re more likely to say don’t touch the national anthem. Where as younger Canadians are more likely to say it’s a good idea.”

research was also separated into gender categories, which Canseco thought would be a major deciding factor.

“It ended up being more of a question of youth versus middle age Canadians and those over 55. Baby boomers tend to be more clingy towards the old lyrics, where as millennials say this makes sense I can definitely alter the way I sing the anthem and something I’m happy with.”

Agreement with new lyrics drop significantly with age, from 51 per cent among 18 to 34, 44 per cent who are 35 to 54, and 35 per cent for 55 and older.

Cancseco says he would like to see what the outcome is two or three years from now when the anthem has been established.
