Premier John Horgan responded to a comments made earlier this week by Prince George-Mackenzie MLA Mike Morris.
In the house, Morris said the money being put towards Indigenous language could have been better spent on policing in rural communities.
Horgan says this decision has been well received by communities.
“I would argue that when you start to address the essence of culture, which is language, you get better outcomes in communities and that’s our objective here. Mr. Morris comes from law enforcement and he may well fall back to law enforcement as the solution to all problems, I just disagree with him.”
Morris did state he thinks this cause is important, but said $50 million could help prevent sexual violence and domestic abuse taking place in indigenous areas.
Melanie Mark, Advanced Education Minister, called the remarks “appalling” adding he should apologize for his comment.
