The City of Prince George is looking to give transit riders another option for their daily commute.
This comes in the form of three new BC Transit Vicinity buses for the city.
The new buses are smaller at 35 feet and more compact than current buses in PG. Even with the smaller space, the buses still sit 30 passengers with room for another 24 standees and two mobility aids.
“We’ll take a look at how these three smaller buses operate throughout our routes,” explains Mayor Lyn Hall.
“Certainly from an operational perspective, they’re more efficient, a little easier with maneuverability, they provide great access for people with mobility issues.”
The new buses also come with closed-circuit television cameras and onboard aids in case of a health problem.
This is not an idea that came to light overnight.
“We’ve been asked for quite some time wouldn’t it be easier and cheaper for us to use smaller buses,” Hall says.
“So when you take a look at this 35-foot bus it’s certainly much smaller than the ones we have now.”
The three buses will replace older ones as part of a province-wide refresh and expansion program.
One new bus is already in PG; the other two are expected within a month.
