Prince George officially a designated Foreign Trade Zone

Prince George is expected to benefit from new jobs and business opportunities after two announcements were made.

PG will now be a designation as a Foreign Trade Zone(FTZ), the first in BC to achieve this, along with receiving $335,566 to support the clean technology sector.

The announcement was made by Pamela Goldsmith-Jones, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of international Trade, saying Prince George plays a major part in supply and service in the province.

“Prince George is one of the fastest growing regions in Canada. The workforce of Prince George is the backbone of a region of over 300,000 people. The population of 70,000 who live here makes Prince George the supply and service centre for business, industry, transportation, healthcare, education, and culture.”

Minister of State Trade George Chow was also in attendance and says the location of PG was a big factor in making it a trade destination.

“It’s very centrally located in the province. It’s actually a transportation hub even for air transport from nation to the eastern United States, and I think Prince George wants to be a hub between Asia and Canada.”

Making PG a FTZ point, and investing in clean technology, will help with the governments plan to encourage businesses to compete on an international scale. Something Chow thinks Northern BC can play a major role in.

“You have the infrastructure and also the land that is really suited for resource development and also economic development.”

The investment in clean technology will also be attractive to foreign investors, as countries in Asia are looking in areas to invest to lower their carbon footprint.
