UNBC one of BC’s Best Employers for a third straight year

For a third consecutive year, UNBC has been named as one of the province’s top employers.

The post-secondary institution has been ranked first in BC based on several professional developments within the school and offers among employees, with a goal of creating progressive, forward-thinking programs.

“Heading into our next 25 years as we grow and mature, we’re trying to continue to focus on making this an even better place to be,” says UNBC Associate Vice-President Barb Daigle.

“For example, last week, we had fellow here to speak about mental health in the workplace; even holding events like that make us pretty proud to be that kind of employer.”

This includes tuition waivers for employees, their spouses, and other eligible family members, topped salaries for new parents on a leave, and even discounts for using the Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre.

Daigle says these packages are important to offer to prospective hires despite the school’s lack of financial resources.

“There are some areas that are more difficult to recruit into. Faculty with PHDs in nursing are hard to come by because there’s not many of them, but generally we don’t have a difficult time recruiting. We have lots of applicants for jobs and we have the luxury of looking for and finding the right candidate each and every time.”

She adds it’s also important to recruit employees willing to work and stay in Northern BC, whether they’re born and raised in the region or from out of province.

Other criteria judged in the competition include,

  • Employment atmosphere
  • Financial stability
  • Family & health benefits
  • Vacation & time off
  • Employee communications
  • Performance management
  • Training & development
  • Community involvement

UNBC first made the list in 2012, taking the top spot in four of the last five years.
