A College of New Caledonia Instructor is leading the charge and constructing an environment friendly and efficient fuel source for the Purden Ski Resort.
Byron Poppleton teaches power and engineering at the CNC, and has undertaken the construction of a biomass energy source, that is – the burning of things like wood chips, nut shells, corn cobs and sawdust to fuel the Resort and reduce its dependence on fossil fuels.
When asked about his personal reasons for taking on such a role his answer was simple:
“Its really a commercial thing, like I’m looking at this as a business venture”
Poppleton will construct the equipment himself with the help of a small team, they are hoping to produce between 2 and 3 thousand watts, which is comparable to the power needed for two large homes.
