February marks Black History Month across the country, to celebrate the achievements made by black people.
The College of New Caledonia is teaming up, once again, with the Prince George African Heritage Society to host a fundraiser.
This has become tradition for both organizations to raise money towards different causes, last year making more than $4,000 for the Give a Chance Society, this year funds will go to Dominican Hurricane Maria Relief Fund.
Instructor and Organizer George Kaweesi says this event is growing among the community.
“The number of black people in Prince George is just growing year-by-year. In the last five years there has been lots of black families.”
“The celebration does help us highlight the best of black history and its culture,” added Kaweesi. “It also helps us connect to where we come from, so, it’s a part of getting awareness out of black people in general.”
At CNC more than 20 per cent of the student population comes from another country.
The celebration kicks off tonight at 7pm in the First Baptist Church in PG.
Tickets are $10 and are available at the CNC Bookstore, Books & Company, Serengeti Northern BC, DJ Afro Superstore, Roll-A-Dome and at the door. Children 12 and under are free.
