It’s amazing what hard work and determination can do for a community.
At a council meeting in September 2017, members of the Starlane community went to council looking to gain approval for construction of a new park instead of just having the old facility torn down.
They accomplished their goal and a new project was set for 2021, but that wasn’t soon enough for Councillor Terri McConnachie.
Monday’s Budget meeting saw the councillor lobby for the project to be bumped ahead to this year instead.
“They came to council, they were prepared, they had all of their fact-finding done, they presented their case very well,” explains McConnachie.
“I just think that it really adds value to a neighbourhood, especially when there are families raising kids or just anybody, it just adds value to a neighbourhood when you have that place to go to.”
The motion was passed unanimously, much to the delight of McConnachie.
“I’m so happy that the rest of my colleagues saw fit to agree with my argument that this group, I don’t want to say deserved, but they worked hard and, as I say, they need to be acknowledged,” she says.
“I look forward to them hearing about it, I’m really excited for them.”
