A UNBC Assistant Professor has published a new book on how German immigrants who moved to Argentina adapted to the country while maintaining links to their homeland.
Dr. Benjamin Bryce book To Belong In Buenos Aires focuses on immigration, something he says is a very relevant topic nowadays.
“A lot of the concerns about immigration have just been repeating themselves for the past 150 years, but then the target of the fear is always evolving, so, there are similar things if there are anti-immigrant discussion about certain groups today, whether it is Canada or Argentina, those same things are being said 100 years ago, but about groups today that no one would have concerns about.”
Bryce added through fear Germans were able to create education, religion, language and social welfare that made them able to raise a generation of children who were considered Argentinian while appreciating their German roots.
The Lutheran churches established by the immigrants are still standing, but many are now host Spanish-speaking Protestant congregations. The German hospital in Buenos Aries is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, and although the signage remains bilingual, the day-to-day language in the facility is Spanish.
