The Wildfire Management Branch of BC is putting out a different type of fire today as it attempts to contact 15 thousand people affected by a data breach on its servers.
Executive Directors Brian Simpson says on Sept 24th, the hacker gained access to general job application info for about 90 min;
“It’s associated with our recruitment process. Anyone that applies to fire crews in the province would apply through this system and the data is then collected and stored in that system. It’s basic information such as a persons and address. In some cases drivers’ license and birth date”
The database records are up to ten years old, raising questions as to why exactly the Wildfire management branch was storing the info for so long;
“It’s something that we are looking at now, how long should we be storing this information. Obviously given the breach we are doing everything we can to limit opportunities in the future”
If you think you could be affected call 1-844-456-2284 for information on how to sign up for free credit protection services.
