Prince George city council has approved 8.9 kilometers (8,859 meters) more sidewalk receive enhanced clearing and removal of snow and ice.

All new areas approved to be cleared come from the previous 20 kilometers of sidewalk which is left uncleared for a variety of reasons not specified in the report.

This will leave roughly 11.1 kilometers uncleared by the city.

“Too many people feel trapped in their homes, especially if they have mobility issues or they’re aging, and so I think the clearer we can keep the sidewalks, the better,” explains Councillor Murry Krause, who has heard these concerns for a while.

“I have talked to lots of seniors over the years who have told me they’ve felt trapped in their own homes in the winter so I think anything we can do to eliminate that because people shouldn’t feel that.”

The additional estimated cost is $49,904 and is expected to be covered by the city’s $7-million snow budget.
